Day 1 - finding a judo instructor

Since my arrival in Taiwan, Republic of China, some 39 years ago, foremost in my mind was to learn the art of empty handed self-defense. I had just spent a year in Viet Nam and was not eager to return there. In my mind I had made it through the valley of death unscathed with all of my faculties in check. To me, this assignment was going to be a piece of cake. It was vacation. I was in a far off land, in Asia, where Marco Paulo once stood. These thoughts loomed in my head as I sat on the military bus making its way from Tainan, AB to the military all ranks club located off Tai Tung Liu near the outskirts of Tainan city.
